The ceremonies are over, the gowns are returned, photos developed and your parents aren’t that proud of you anymore. Now comes the time for many, many of us to sit down in front of the computer or hover that giant Sharpie pen over the newspaper, and look for someone who is brave enough to hire [...]
As convocation is a few weeks away for some of us, I was joking with a friend if they will play Pomp & Circumstance in the Chan. Then the conversation dissolved into naming bizarre theme songs for the ceremony. Here are some honourable mentionables:
Reuters, now Thomson Reuters has summarized the crisis of rising food costs in some very smart maps. Mouse over to see countries with the latest food-related news and switch over to see what government are doing in response. Man, technology is so COOL! It totally baffles me.
If you don’t know about Yang Liu already, read s’more here on her website. I’m keeping my eyes out for more of her work ever since I saw the “East Meets West” exhibit online (navigate: “Special”, then “Ost rifft West”). It’s been awhile since I related to art like this. I’ve always been artistically [...]
Please make Banterist your one-stop source for potentially obscure, Harry Potter, Star Trek and Moonraker-related political humor.
(Re-printed with permission. See Brian Sack‘s original post at his website The Banterist. Also highly recommend, The Nigerian Email Experiment)
For those of us leaving campus soon, here I am again promoting the hell out of things I think is worth doing before graduation – item #139: see a movie at the Norm Theatre:
The line up for the next few weeks? Oscar Nights.
The Kite Runner
No Country for Old Men

…NOT.
If you struggle with income taxes like me, then I highly recommend the UBC Tax Assistance Clinic for Students (TACS). One of the greatest examples of how awesome it is when students help students (with some coordination and money help from some UBC folks, and big corporations like KPMG and Deloitte). You sit [...]
Peeple, peeple! That’s what I’m talking about! This is exactly the type of thing that I go gaga over and Washington Post has successfully done it. I now love the paper and its writers.
Read here first about the first annual Washington Post Peeps Show Diorama Contest. I don’t think the writers were expecting [...]
Make your mark. Make an impact. Make a memory.
UBC International Week is a focal point for international learning led by UBC students. With opportunities for interaction, reflection, and fun, the week is filled with global chats, international career and volunteer fairs, dance, drama, international films, displays, and delectable foods. Join the UBC International [...]
Stay away from our ribs
Just read an excellent article in Foreign Policy that raises a lot of the same questions I asked ever since the plans for the new US embassy in Baghdad leaked online. Loeffler isn’t alone in voicing her concerns about the future of the embassy and the [...]
FREE MONEY!
… and now that I have your attention! READ ON!
Nothing important… just this little gem that only a handful of UBC’ers know and about to be exposed in front of the vast domain called the INTERNET.
I’m certain that someone is going to shell it out for the Centennial. Now sing along with pride!
(WARNING: the images below may cause excessive repetition “awwwww”and “OMG”. Not suggested for the faint of heart.)
The Germans are a cool bunch. A friend of mine has a slight obsession with them and their culture. To their credit, the German vocabulary is just so much cooler than ours and they supply a healthy amount [...]
So, as my immigrant family adjusts to living in Canada, one of the challenges was finding the foods we missed back home. We sought for replacements, alternatives, or sometimes simply just try re-adjusting our diets. My dilemma to stay healthy and eat locally has been difficult. I live at home, a lot of the grocery [...]
