How do we build stronger social movements? How do we engage people who may not know where to start with activism? These were some of the questions on the minds of Alex Mierke Zatwarnicki and Urooba Jamal when they, along with 14 other undergraduate students, started an alternative student press on campus.

The Talon, which launched in early October, has taken UBC by storm, growing both in popularity amongst students and becoming a vital source of information for the UBC community.

However, as Alex and Urooba explain in their TEDx Terry Talk, their main goal was to create a space where students can have the freedom to start and facilitate critical conversations on campus.

In this TEDx Terry Talk, they talk about how alternative media can facilitate activism in a university context, and why we should not underestimate the capacity that students have to make palpable change.
