Plants don’t last forever -or- A call for new 10 meter diet crops
After 3 weeks away from my crops, I returned home to a surprise: flowers. But not just any flowers, lettuce flowers. Apparently, lettuce have flowers.
I’m not sure why I’m so surprised by this – they’re angiosperms after all – but I guess seeing a 4-5 meter long stalk growing forth out of a little pot is somewhat startling, even if only due to the big plant-little pot contrast alone.
Anyways, I was hoping someone out there could suggest a few new crops to start growing so late in the season, preferably something that grows relatively quickly.

It’s perfect timing to plant your lettuce all over again. My current batch of lettuce is an inch tall. I seed my mixed greens 4-5 times over the spring/summer so that I can harvest all year long. Garden stores will also have basil plants right now – always a good bet – especially if you like pesto. If you see a good looking tomato plant, you’re also in time for cultivating some real treats. If you’re interested in something more “exotic”, I could transplant one of my little broccoli seedlings and bring it in for you. I’ve never grown broccoli in a pot before, though, so I’m not sure how it would work. Let me know…
