Register for TEDxTt 2010

Imagine UBC’s most fascinating and engaging students coming together for a day, giving ‘the talk of their lives,’ sharing their ideas and discussing their visions for UBC and the world. Now imagine being there, with students, alumni, faculty, administration, and members of the general public watching this unfold and partaking in the various discussions, and think of all the possibilities that this idea-share holds.

The UBC Terry Project is happy to annually present the TEDx Terry talks (TEDxTt) student conference – a different kind of student conference, one that focuses on the inspired efforts of the very folks you share classes with.

We are excited to announce that this year TEDxTt will be partnering with The UBC Dollar Project to host The Briefing @ Terry talks, an innovative way of showcasing organizations and initiatives worth supporting! Read more below.

Every year, “TEDx Terry talks” is held on campus, where students are given a high profile platform to communicate their passions and desires to an audience of their UBC peers. It essentially borrows a template from a well-established conference known as the TED conference, and modifies it for delivery within the UBC setting.

Here, the general intent is to bring together the University’s “most fascinating (student) thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives.” Under this context, a single day conference would accommodate 8 student speakers from a wide range of interests and backgrounds. The talks will be held at the Life Science Institute, where one can engage as many as 350 audience members. The talks will also be professionally video archived for online presentation.

This will hopefully provide stimulating content, relevant to a variety of globally relevant issues, and will ultimately foster collaborative efforts and idea sharing amongst the conference attendees. In all, this will strengthen the existing networks responsible for student led initiatives, and in doing so act as a significant catalyst in creating a stronger socially responsible student community.

Like the TED conference, there is also the aim to provide the opportunity of “making a wish” with a few of the selected speakers. These wishes will be made under the pretense that audience members are, in principle, committed to helping out with one of these wishes in some way, whether it be due to expertise, contacts, spreading the word, etc.

As well, booths and mingling/networking opportunities outside of the actual speaking engagements will be made available. These opportunities will be held in an adjacent space – one of the atriums of the Life Science Institute.

This year TEDx Terry talks is going to be a bit different – a little bit more spice if you’d like. We’ll be holding The Briefing @ Terry talks in partnership with the UBC Dollar Project.

So what’s The Briefing? It is a gathering where all participants donate a minimum of $1 in return for a vote. 6 charitable causes will present 3-minute “pitches” to sway the participants’ votes. The winning cause gets all the donations. These “pitches” will take place throughout the day during TEDx Terry talks. At the end, we all donate, vote and see the results! It’s pretty incredible to imagine how much impact a tiny loonie can create when we act together, eh?

Just remember that this year, there will 18-minute “talks” and 3-minute “pitches” at TEDx Terry talks. “Talks” can be about any topic you are passionate about, but “pitches” are only for charitable causes that are taking action about a global or local issue.

Be prepared to be swept off your feet by the passion and action of your fellow students! Hopefully, you’ll catch this powerful wave and make a splash of your own.

In giving a talk? Whether in the context of an individual with a particular passion, or as a representative of a group or organization. See here for application details – note, we won’t be looking at applications until next year, but if you want to send one one, you’re certainly welcome!

In giving a pitch? The application process is roughly similar to giving a talk. Please see here for details.

In providing a booth or some other Atrium related request? Maybe even something to entertain the crowds? You can contact us at terrytalks@gmail.com noting “Atrium Request” in the subject heading.

In attending the conference itself? The 2010 TEDx Terry talks will take place on Saturday, October 2 at the Life Sciences Centre. Details will be presented on this during the first week back at school in the 2010/2011 academic year.

In staying in the loop? Best way to do this is maybe following our twitter page, joining our facebook group, or alternatively checking in regularly with our blog.

In sponsoring the event, or better yet potentially sponsoring a wish? Information in that regard will be available shortly. For now, please contact Dave Ng at db@interchange.ubc.ca

In hosting something similar at your own institution? Notes on this are being prepared as we speak and will be presented at a later date on this website.

In helping us spread the word? That would be wonderful. If it helps, you can show people our various promo videos below. Enjoy!
