Attention Science, Engineering, Commerce and Arts students! Are you interested in: running an international conference in Mumbai, India? Representing UBC at a conference in Princeton? Honing your leadership skills and thinking broadly about issues in business, security, science and technology? Making friendships for a lifetime?
The UBC Global Crisis Simulation (GCS), an international debate, case and crisis simulation conference, is currently accepting applications for staff positions.
Held in Mumbai, India and slated for an inaugural conference in February 2014, the GCS will bring together 400 students from the world’s top secondary and post-secondary for three days to simulate crises based on topics in business, security, science and technology.
Prospective UBC student staff need not have previous experience in debate, model UN, or business case competition to apply.
For more information, RSVP for our information session on Friday, November 30, 2012 at 6:00pm @ http://j.mp/ubcgcs (seating is limited!)
Whoa – this brings back memories. This was our first ever promo video for our first ever TEDxTerryTalks. Still has some good advice, and don’t forget that if you want to give a talk in this year’s TEDxTerryTalks, you’ll need to submit an application (super easy to do) by tonight. (Go here to get details and apply!)
Seriously, just leave a comment letting us know what you’re going as (or if, instead, you’re the sort who refuses to dress up). I’ll be doing my standard Jedi Knight costume, but only because that gives me an excuse to buy a cool toy lightsaber.
Tell me this isn't awesome. Click on the image to see more
Finally, and still on the subject of cool things: don’t forget to check out the upcoming TEDxTerry Talks conference. It’s going to be epic! (register here – tickets going quick, so if you think you’re interested, it’s probably best to get them sooner rather than later).
Well, I’ve got to say, that as someone who has seen the first round of rehearsal talks for TEDxTerry Talks 2011, we are really in for a treat. No wait, that phrase doesn’t really do it justice – let’s just say that it’s going to be both awesome and epic, which as far as adjectives go, is not so bad for a conference.
I also notice that ticket buying is starting to ramp up, so if you want to make sure you don’t miss out, I would get your tickets earlier rather than later. Go here to get tickets. Go here to learn more about the November 5th conference. Go here, if for some strange reason you need to see all of this information in Facebook format. Click on this #TEDxTt hashtag if (just as strange) twitter is the only way you can talk.
And let me also leave you this informative video, useful for all students young and old, who have to give a public talk. It’s a PSA called “Thing to avoid when speaking publicly.” (and also a promo video for our first TEDxTerryTalks all those years ago).
Don’t know what TEDxTerry Talks is all about? Well, it’s a student conference where UBC students are given the TED platform to speak. Here, you’ll be given 18 minutes in front of 300 audience members, as well as the opportunity to be professionally filmed, and have that video forwarded to the TED folks in NYC.
So, if you have something you really want to share, spread the word about, or just get off your chest, then you’ll need to know that application deadline for TEDxTerry Talks is coming up soon (next Tuesday actually, Sept 27th). Even if you’re not sure you’re ready for this opportunity, maybe you have a friend who you know would give an awesome talk. At the very least, maybe you can be part of that audience, and take part in one of the best networking opportunities on campus (you can register for the conference here).
Anyway, at the very least, it’s always fun to think about what you might talk about. And with this train of thought, check out some of the topic suggestions we saw earlier at Imagine Day (you can see all of them here).
Perhaps you want to talk about something personal:
Or maybe something you’re not necessarily comfortable about:
Or maybe something really really specific:
Maybe something fun:
Or different fun?
How about something serious?
Or not serious at all:
In any event, do us a favour and spread the word (on twitter we’ll start using the #TEDxTt hashtag). The more applications we get, the more awesome our roster of student speakers will be. For full details, do check it out here, and if you just want to come to the TEDx conference, you can register here (for a paltry $7 which includes coffees and lunch!)
Two years ago, a warrior of educational reform, and a tremendously inspirational figure, Sir Ken Robinson participated in the Terry Global Speaker Series. His visit launched the beginning of wonderfully exciting storytelling projects and discussions that took place during the rest of the year, and it was one of the loveliest learning experiences I’ve ever had. Sir Ken just brings that kind of energy to a city and a community.
And happily, on August 25th, Sir Ken Robinson will be in Vancouver once again speaking at an event titled Educating the Heart and Mind with the Dalai Lama Centre. Student tickets are $30 and from the description, it sounds like an amazing event. More details can be found here.
