My sister had a great idea for our family for next Christmas. We have a big family that live from Western to Eastern Canada and it is hard to do the gift giving thing from year to year.
a) why trains are roomy versus why airplanes are crammed and b) why the popularity of hats in Britain has never quite translated over to this side of the pond.
Whoa. Writing that just freaked me out substantially. However, I am determined to help you find your last minute gifts for your loved ones. One day at a time.
My first pick is a truly awesome and beautiful book for the hip foodie in your life. The hip foodie in my life reserved her copy [...]
Richard Kemick delivers a scathing and very very funny diatribe as he laments the disparity between the “have” and “have not” University Faculties.
“Richard Kemick is originally from Calgary, Alberta and is studying English Literature and History at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He has a semi-erotic obsession with Shakespeare, Canada, and [...]
Laura Bain – Living with Bipolar Type II – TEDxTerryTalks 2011
Laura Bain speaks about living with Bipolar Type II Disorder, the trials and tribulations, but also how it informs her vibrant character and wonderful sense of identity.
“Laura is a very passionate person and as a 5th year Biology student she is a lover of Science. She is an avid cyclist, a teacher, an [...]
I dug up this image from Word and I set out to look at it from a few different perspectives. I saw…
an underused piece of Clip Art a modern representation of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (bit of a stretch) memos in paper form (widely considered an obsolete way to [...]
Hi everyone,
First post in a while! It’s been a hectic few weeks, but I must say it’s good to be back. It’s hard to believe that it’s already the first of December, one more month until 2012 is upon us.
Today, though, is a unique day on its own – World AIDS Day. The [...]
Recently, Allen and I gave a talk to students in SCIE113. Basically, it was about the value of looking at both the scientific and humanities perspective when talking about global issues. In this particular lecture, we focused on climate change, and true to form, we took a little too long with our presentation and [...]
A few years back, our blogger Dave Semeniuk asked folks to think a little bit differently when it came to the time honoured tradition of making a gingerbread house. That is: can you make a “sustainable gingerbread house.”
Needless to say, the entries we got were so awesomely full of sustainable goodness, that [...]
An introduction is in order. First, though, a personal TV hero (are those allowed?) He’s perhaps a familiar face to those who watch The West Wing, a show about the President of the United States and the support in place to maintain this branch of government.
Meet Toby Ziegler, White House Communications Director. [...]
I really love cute animal videos. Pugs, sloths, lemurs, and my personal favourite, the capybara…
That is a mother and baby capybara. They are 100 lbs rodents, and I found someone who is selling them in New Westminster for $1000. Now that I’ve got your attention…
Ethan Zuckerman is giving a talk at Chan [...]
This year’s first Terry Global Speakers Series speaker, Bill McKibben, will be visiting Occupy Vancouver with Gordon Katic and Sam Fenn of The Terry Project Podcast, less than 12 hours after police began clearing out Occupy Wall Street. Bill vocally supported #OWS, going so far as to suggest his pipeline [...]
Research is simply not enough. Although R&D is the root of discovery and innovation, it in and of itself does not exact the change we want in the world. That goes without saying. Yet I feel that in a world where we are inundated with information, we sometimes forget the meaning behind that data. When [...]
Tuition: a conservative view
It’s a fact of life that certain programs cost more to study than others. Presumably this is due to expected earnings in one’s career; those who will earn most can afford to pay more tuition. For years two to five, Applied Science students will pay 7% more per credit (the extra year results in even [...]
Here’s a video of Bill McKibben being profound. As he tends to be.
If you care about the continued existence of life as we know it (and hopefully you do)…
and if you would like to experience his rousing rhetoric in person (and [...]
(If you write a blog post about TEDxTerryTalks 2011, please do let us know by leaving a link in the comment section – we’ll try to compile them with a link round-up at the bottom of this post. This kind of feedback is also handy for things like grant writing so that we can keep [...]
Sauder Africa: Building Entrepreneurial Success in Kenyan Slums
It has already been 6 years since the first team of UBC students started teaching basic business skills courses in the poorest slums of Nairobi, Kenya. We have educated over 300 students and about 60 UBC students participated in the program (some of them more than once) and we are very proud of those achievements.
November 5th at the TEDx Terry Talks.
Facebook / Twitter – #TEDxTt / iTunes
On October 20th the UBC entrepreneurial community gathered to watch 5 UBC companies pitch to a panel of judges. Each team was given 10 minutes to present their business in hopes of getting an investment of up to $100,000. The companies were then faced with an intense Q&A session for an additional 10 minutes.
As [...]

Christmas Pick 2: The Little Bookish Stocking Stuffer
First, it’s so cute.
And it says “tiny” in the title.
But also, it’s monumentally cool – especially for the hipster artsy girl in your life.
hitRECord is a creative collaborative website directed and started by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (of (500) Days of Summer and other films). It is really ambitious and [...]
