UBC Admin has a Blog!
Over the past two months a group of students and courageous administrators have been working to develop a new way of communicating to students what is happening on campus. The first project that they have taken on is blogging. Now anyone with technologically challenged parents will know that expectations of someone of the ‘pre-internet’ generation [...]
Building on the renewed success of the 2009 TEDx Terry Talks in October, we are looking to hire two students to work on the planning of next year’s event. The two lucky students will do the following:
Work as a member of the Terry Team on all aspects of planning, coordination, [...]

Our Torch to Bear
By Matt Whiteman
On the evening of February 11th, just before the Olympic torch arrived on UBC campus, I met with our university’s president, Stephen J. Toope, along with about twenty other students representing globally-engaged groups at UBC. Together, these groups form the founding members of the Global Lounge, a new space housed at Marine [...]
Genetic Art – Featuring You!
I recently came across a website, DNA 11, whose catchphrase is There is Only One Original. They are, of course, referring to you your genetic make-up which the company collects and creates artwork out of. It sounds absurd but this is how it works.
So I just received an e-mail from UBC asking me to fill out a survey on tuition. There are three questions and they read as follows:
To what extent will the proposed 2% tuition increase ($88.59 on a base Arts/Science tuition) be an impediment to you continuing your studies at UBC? Your tuition currently pays [...]
Are you interested in getting involved to make UBC a better place to learn? The TAG Living Lab is a group of students and support from TAG who bring the equity and diversity issues to a faculty audience. They practice and learn about diversity issues Thursdays 2:30-5:30 throughout the term, beginning January 21st. During these [...]
By far the one of the best experiences I’ve ever been a part of was attending the 2nd Annual Clinton Global Initiative University Conference in Austin, TX last year.
If you are a student bent on making a positive difference in the world then this is the place to get your [...]
For those of you who haven’t finalized your schedules for next term, I’ve found a couple fantastic courses that will engage the Terryness inside of you!
We all know that students have become very passionate about sustainability. Now is your chance to let the UBC administration know how important it is and ensure that sustainability becomes a pillar in the our academic life.
A group of students has been trying to lobby for [...]

A lot of us students continually struggle with a difficult question: What am I going to do after I graduate?
Well, that search is over for me. I’m going to do a PhD. What changed my mind? This paper.

CLASS is just around the corner! That’s right, the Conference for Learning and Academic Student Success, a new initiative here at UBC dedicated to fostering academic transition for first-year students, is happening in only a few weeks. This conference will play a large role in assisting first-year students with their transition [...]
Join Common Energy!
Want to help the climate movement. Join Common Energy.
Their mission: To bring UBC beyond climate neutral. In other words, believe that the UBC community of students, faculty and staff should work together to reduce our climate footprint [...]
A proposal went though recently to put a hospice on campus. This seems like a great way for UBC to make some extra coin on some of the campuses unused land. Problem though – one of the proposed sites for the hospice is behind St. John’s College – right next to [...]
The chess game that is the Federal Election is off to an interesting start.
Whether you love him or hate him, Stephen Harper is one of the best political tacticians this country has ever seen. One day after Ignatieff’s decision to cease support for the minority government, Harper has put the Liberal leader in [...]
Yesterday, Michael Ignatieff stood in front his caucus and declared that Liberal support for the reigning Conservative government has come to an end; it was time to ‘take the government off life support’.
You’ve failed to protect the most vulnerable. You’ve failed to create jobs. Failed to defend our healthcare. Failed to restore our finances.
[...]
If your like me then you’re always trying to keep your finger on the political pulse. However, you probably aren’t one of those people (I live in a lonely, little world) so I’m here to tell you about one of the most absurd stories that I’ve ever heard of in politics: birthers.
Who are [...]

The Problem With the Healthcare Debate
With all the debate going on in the US about ‘Obamacare’ and health reform it is hard for Americans to not make comparisons to other systems. The Canadian system has been used as an example by both the GOP and the Dems as an example of what we shouldn’t or should do. Naturally, [...]
