The Role of Alternative Campus Press | Urooba Jamal and Alex Mierke-Zatwarnicki | TEDxTerryTalks

How do we build stronger social movements? How do we engage students with activism and social movements? These were just some of the questions that led Alex Mierke-Zatwarnicki and Urooba Jamal, along with 14 other UBC students, to start an alternative student press on campus. Since its launch, The Talon has become both a popular source of information and a vital venue for discussion for the UBC community. In this TEDx talk, Alex and Urooba talk about how alternative media can facilitate activism in a university context, and why we should not underestimate the capacity that students have to make palpable change.

Alex is a fourth-year student majoring in Political Science at UBC. Urooba is a fifth-year student majoring in International Relations at UBC. Both Alex and Urooba are co-founders and editors of The Talon UBC.
