Bill McKibben is an environmentalist, author, and activist. Hailed “the world’s best green journalist” by Time magazine, McKibben has re-framed the climate change debate. [...]
Are you a UBC undergraduate who has written a paper about some international political issue? Why not have it submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. Details here:
Founded in 1985, the Journal of International Affairs is a student-led, faculty-reviewed journal at the University of British Columbia that showcases UBC undergraduate [...]
Recently, Allen and I gave a talk to students in SCIE113. Basically, it was about the value of looking at both the scientific and humanities perspective when talking about global issues. In this particular lecture, we focused on climate change, and true to form, we took a little too long with our presentation and [...]
A few years back, our blogger Dave Semeniuk asked folks to think a little bit differently when it came to the time honoured tradition of making a gingerbread house. That is: can you make a “sustainable gingerbread house.”
Needless to say, the entries we got were so awesomely full of sustainable goodness, that [...]
An introduction is in order. First, though, a personal TV hero (are those allowed?) He’s perhaps a familiar face to those who watch The West Wing, a show about the President of the United States and the support in place to maintain this branch of government.
Meet Toby Ziegler, White House Communications Director. [...]
As much as I love the New York Times, ‘whatever works’ is starting to look like the most practical and realistic way to approach journalism in the brave new social networked world that we live in.
Bill McKibben’s visit to UBC this week was a tremendous success. The Chan Centre was packed, the atmosphere was electric, the reviews were spectacular, and the attendees were truly inspired. However, that was the easy part. Now the hard work begins; we have to follow up, and follow through.
I’m really encouraged to see that [...]
I really love cute animal videos. Pugs, sloths, lemurs, and my personal favourite, the capybara…
That is a mother and baby capybara. They are 100 lbs rodents, and I found someone who is selling them in New Westminster for $1000. Now that I’ve got your attention…
Ethan Zuckerman is giving a talk at Chan [...]
This piece appeared on the Ubyssey’s website today, and a shortened version will appear in this Thursday’s print edition.
Being an environmentalist isn’t easy.
When we survey this changing planet, we experience sweltering temperatures, suffer turbulent seas and witness melting ice caps. The processes we’ve begun are unprecedented; the Earth we’ve been accustomed to [...]
This year’s first Terry Global Speakers Series speaker, Bill McKibben, will be visiting Occupy Vancouver with Gordon Katic and Sam Fenn of The Terry Project Podcast, less than 12 hours after police began clearing out Occupy Wall Street. Bill vocally supported #OWS, going so far as to suggest his pipeline [...]
It’s that huge recruitment season again. UBC Career Services have been sending invitations to networking events, career fairs, info sessions and so on non-stop over these few weeks. I have been to a few and on one occasion AIESEC UBC recruited new members for this year, I had the privilege of interviewing many candidates. So I thought [...]
Research is simply not enough. Although R&D is the root of discovery and innovation, it in and of itself does not exact the change we want in the world. That goes without saying. Yet I feel that in a world where we are inundated with information, we sometimes forget the meaning behind that data. When [...]
Hello all, Just a quick message to let you know that tomorrow is TEDxVancouver. It’s actually happening on campus at the Chan Centre, and unfortunately spots have long been accounted for. However, you can still watch the whole thing in its entirety via a livestream that the TEDxVancouver organizers have set up.
Livestream [...]
Here’s a video of Bill McKibben being profound. As he tends to be.
If you care about the continued existence of life as we know it (and hopefully you do)…
and if you would like to experience his rousing rhetoric in person (and [...]
(If you write a blog post about TEDxTerryTalks 2011, please do let us know by leaving a link in the comment section – we’ll try to compile them with a link round-up at the bottom of this post. This kind of feedback is also handy for things like grant writing so that we can keep [...]
The Terry Project Podcast #3: Journalism and Media (Part 1 of 2) by Gordon Katic
On this episode of the Terry Project Podcast, we look at journalism and media. First, we speak to the Emmy award winning investigative journalist and former producer of 60 minutes, Peter Klein. Then, we [...]
Sauder Africa: Building Entrepreneurial Success in Kenyan Slums
It has already been 6 years since the first team of UBC students started teaching basic business skills courses in the poorest slums of Nairobi, Kenya. We have educated over 300 students and about 60 UBC students participated in the program (some of them more than once) and we are very proud of those achievements.
November 5th at the TEDx Terry Talks.

Tuition: a conservative view
It’s a fact of life that certain programs cost more to study than others. Presumably this is due to expected earnings in one’s career; those who will earn most can afford to pay more tuition. For years two to five, Applied Science students will pay 7% more per credit (the extra year results in even [...]
