I ducked into the Vancouver Art Gallery this afternoon and, on the fourth floor, came across an image of Edward Burtynsky. I really dig Burtynsky’s work (site). He has spent his life as a fine art photographer creating images of natural landscapes that have been impacted by human activities – from mines and [...]

I am currently involved with a group of graduate and undergraduate students led by Dr. Mike Gold in the planning for World AIDS Day events happening in the Life Sciences Center on December 1st. Here, everyone has an opportunity to hear out two world renowned AIDS [...]
Another weekend, another gallery show. This Saturday, Plank Gallery is holding “Heads or Tails: a group exhibition regarding animals, humans, and print media.” The basic premise of the show is interesting: a group of invited local artists react to a chosen article pertaining to animals that has appeared in a local newspaper. Animals? Art? Media? [...]
If anyone’s looking for something (other than the last pit night) to fill their time this evening, consider checking this out. I’m thinking of heading down to the downtown branch of the public library myself, depending on how much procrastinating I feel is required to avoid studying. ahem.
Anyways, this forum seems particularly relevant, [...]
The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries has released an interesting video on food security.
I came across this video on GOOD magazine. What is GOOD?
GOOD is a collaboration of individuals, businesses, and nonprofits pushing the world forward. Since 2006 we’ve been making a magazine, videos, and events for people who [...]
Good thing it didn’t hit the tar sands, or else I presume we would have seen something even more spectacular.
The Africa Canada Accountability Coalition, which was recently founded by UBC students, is planning a day of action on November 27, 2008.
The goal is to raise awareness about the conflict in the DRC and to ask the Canadian government to act and alleviate human suffering in the region.
Here’s the lowdown on why [...]
Does anyone know what’s happening here? Between Smith and Drake, nearly every tree has been chopped down. I didn’t notice the enormous stumps at first. Instead, I noticed how bright it was. This must have happened over the past week, because I remember there being trees last weekend.
Dozens of peculiar looking stumps line [...]
Stephanie says:
The Big Sell Out showcases the abstract phenomenon of privatization, depicted in stories about very concrete human destinies around the globe. The documentary tells tragic, tragicomic but also encouraging stories of the everyday life of people, who day by day have to deal with the effects of privatization politics, dictated by anonymous [...]
Thought I would just add my two cents on the Terry Talks: It was amazing.
Two cents over.
But seriously, it was a fascinating day. I had to leave in the middle for a bit to do some advising things, but I saw the first two and the last four speeches. And I participated in [...]
Whew… finished.
And for those of you who were there today, leave a comment below. Better yet, join the facebook group which we’ll use to collect folks interested in staying with the “IF” wish loop.
Overall, I think the conference went pretty well. The speakers certainly delivered and hopefully everyone enjoyed [...]
Next Tuesday, Oxfam UBC is hosting Chai for a Cause, an open-mic night, in honour of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It sounds like its going to be a great event.
Here are the details (also check it out on facebook):
What?: Open-mic night
Where?: Chai Gallery, [...]
If you’re in Vancouver, and you’re into art, and you’re into the eastside, then the 12th annual Eastside Cultural Crawl was made for you. From the site:
The Eastside Culture Crawl officially began in 1997 with 45 artists in 3 Strathcona area studio buildings and was attended by a [...]
With only a few days away, this is just a reminder to register for the inaugural Terry talks, a TED talks-ish event with a UBC twist. It’s going to be held on Nov 22nd from about 9am to 5pm, and has a full day of activities ranging from a collection of great talks, [...]
Google’s philanthropic unit (philanthropic unit?) has taken their ever so popular (well, popular on Terry – see here, here, here, and here) Google Trends tool and applied it for good. According to Google (article), days and weeks before your average American reluctantly heads to the doctor’s office [...]
World AIDS Day is rapidly approaching (December 1st), and after months of planning, hundreds of emails and a few minor breakdowns, here’s what the World AIDS Day Committee came up with:
1) Never hold AIDS Day events on the actual World AIDS Day. It’s two days before finals; no one is going to come out [...]
In the Vancouver Sun, today, Pete McMartin has a great column, a pop quiz actually. I’ll reprint it here, but click here to view the answers.

I haven’t found the homelessness issue in Vancouver to be all black-and-white. In fact, I’m a bit reluctant to weigh in on tomorrow’s election, because I know that there are many sides to every story—and my knowledge on this one, or on our civic parties, is certainly not complete.
But let me throw caution [...]

If Natural Products are Chemical-Free, Pay me 1,000,000 Quid
This has irked me for a very long time. Claims that organic foods and natural products are chemical free are nonsensical. Everything is a chemical. Even if you could obtain 100% pure water, you’d still have a 100% pure chemical – an atom of oxygen bound to 2 hydrogen atoms.
Arguably, the [...]
