Today is the last day of exams (hurrah!). Of course, this means that, as undergraduates collectively take a large, audible sigh of relief, Profs and TAs are franticly trying to finish their marking before grades are due. That said, it’s my time to share a few tips on procrastination:
Tip #1: Learn how [...]
We know scientists are a quirky group – they love topical T-shirts, have an affinity for puns, and, as I discovered this morning, scientists love infusing scientific humor into everyday life:
Note the token blackboard with chemical equations and the Save-the-Earth poster in the background, both of which help groundtruth my proposition.
Bacon, Fish, Arts vs Science, and Dawkins.
This is interesting, if not a bit alarming. Essentially, this story follows a trail of individuals that even Kevin Bacon would be proud of.
The cast includes: a UBC student, her sister (also a UBC student), a senior level biology course, the course’s teacher and the course’s teaching assistant. As well, there is another [...]
Reuters, now Thomson Reuters has summarized the crisis of rising food costs in some very smart maps. Mouse over to see countries with the latest food-related news and switch over to see what government are doing in response. Man, technology is so COOL! It totally baffles me.
Hey people–here’s a great event to come out to tomorrow. Just come out and chillax and show your solidarity for Sudan (the people, not the gov’t).

With your help, this could become a reality soon.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is envisioned to be a national and international destination — a centre of learning and history where Canadians and people from other countries can engage in dialogue and commit to taking action to combat the forces of hate and [...]
How To: Avoid using synthetic furniture oils
I was watching something on television recently (I can’t remember the program) where a crew of people were helping families to “green up” their lives. Besides the usual remedies, something caught my interest: an alternative for synthetic furniture oil.
The thing is, I have this rad teak coffee table from the 1960s that I [...]
This just out in Nature:
BC researchers estimate the Pine beetle to be responsible for more than 5 times the carbon dioxide emissions released from all the automobiles and planes in Canada in a year – approximately 80,000 square km of trees. By 2020, BC forests may be a [...]
Hey, you there – ASIC student. At the beginning of this term, you were probably thinking, “Now, what do I need thermodynamics for? How will thermodynamics help me, or save a life, or end poverty? C’mon science, cough up the fucking goods already!”
Well, I hear you loud and clear – so, I bring you [...]
A friend of mine once told me that – of course, he wasn’t referring to what I am referring to below, but instead he was justifying to me why he became a pot head for a brief period of time. Nonetheless, the quote stuck with me, namely because I believe it to be true; always [...]
Bill C-484
As you probably well know, this is a bill that has been stirring up controversy in some quarters of late. An article from today’s Montreal Gazette gives a strong response to its dissenters, imo. It is not written in the gentlest of prose, but from my point of view an absolutely worthy read. [...]
The Wallstreet journal published an opinions piece (not a big surprise) by Patrick Moore, and why he left Greenpeace. His answer: don’t be mixing your politics with my sciences! Here’s a clip:
My former colleagues ignored science and supported the ban, forcing my departure. Despite science concluding no known health risks – and [...]
this is very rad
A group of online television folks decided, after having read all the news articles and seen all the mock-up drawings of the “texas-sized garbage island” in the Subtropical Pacific gyre, to actually go out there and find it. So far, 9 of 12 episodes have been aired; here’s [...]
this is fun
Researchers at the University of Utah have put together a fun, interactive animation to teach users about, “The physiology of the high.” There are seven stoner mice to choose from, all displaying what you might consider to be cliche characteristics for the particular drug: hand-rubbing paranoid coke heads, [...]
Where: 650 Industrial Ave, Vancouver, B.C. (near 2nd Ave and Main St)
Dates: Friday April 18 – Sunday April 27
Hours: 11am – 6pm daily
TODAY’S SPECIAL is an exhibition showcasing artworks from UBC BFA/BA visual arts students.
These graduating students’ artworks reflect a socially critical perspective and an acute [...]
Today at my lab’s SCQ, there’s an awesome piece that imagines Charles Darwin being brought back to life for next year’s bicentennial celebration. As well, the piece is written in the context of him checking out the proposed (and, hopefully by then, built) replica of the H.M.S. Beagle. Better still, it’s being presented as [...]
Thats right. Free bees.
The right 100 people will be selected to receive:
1 of 100 mason bee kits which include a mason bee condo, DVD and book on maintenance, 5 mason bee cocoons, 1 apple tree, 4 pollen rich plants (shrubs and perennials) and a wildflower mix. In return for all this the [...]

I have no words…
This article brought tears to my eyes this morning.
Weeks away from university graduation, I can’t help thinking about the stereotypes and Islamophobic behaviour that await in the world ahead..
